Attention: Conservative Hypocrites

pm-bullyboy

To all of those Tory supporters fuming with outrage at the possible “overthrow” of Harper’s minority government in an “undemocratic coup” and who are especially aggrieved at the thought of the Bloc’s participation in a progressive coalition government, please read the following letter from your Dear Leader to then Governor General Adrienne Clarkson dated September 9, 2004:

As leaders of the opposition parties, we are well aware that, given the Liberal minority government, you could be asked by the Prime Minister to dissolve the 38th Parliament at any time should the House of Commons fail to support some part of the government’s program. We respectfully point out that the opposition parties, who together constitute a majority in the House, have been in close consultation. We believe that, should a request for dissolution arise this should give you cause, as constitutional practice has determined, to consult the opposition leaders and consider all of your options before exercising your constitutional authority. Your attention to this matter is appreciated.

That letter was signed by all three opposition leaders: Gilles Duceppe, Jack Layton and Stephen Harper.

  1. The Conservative Party? Being hypocritical? Say it ain’t so! Next thing you’ll tell me the sky is blue.

  2. Don’t point out their leader is a hypocrite. That’s just kicking them when they are down.

Not that I am above that sort of thing. 😉

  3. I don’t know if you guys watch Goldhawk Live on Sunday evenings on CPAC – it’s a discussion/call in show. The subject, of course, tomorrow will be the coalition issue and guess what, Poilievre will be there representing the CPC, Judy Scro the Libs…..someone should email Goldhawk and/or call in with this letter and see what Poilievre says…would be funny to watch.

  4. Schadenfreude

ah the delight of the last few days…

immediate new gov’t or not ….
    Harper’s back is finally broken

now can we get back to building a civil society?

  5. The event I’m looking for is the first Conservative to address this inconsistency full on and to see what rationalisations they’ll use.

I know they can do it. It could be as quick and dirty as invoking Adscam to argue that a national crisis prevailed then…or as sophisticated as…well, I suppose long, boring discussion about how liberals and socialists are inherently unfit to guide the ship of State through perilous economic times.

  6. Oooo… They’re on “high alert”! Look out, they’re going to start “flinging the propaganda” to use George Bush’s immortal phrase.

  7. TG – they will not address it. They will ignore it.

Well, judging by this essay in the G&M by some U. of Calgary/CD. Howe fixture, it will get addressed, since the neocon think tanks are on top of it.
