“Freeloading Welfare Queens”

As a counterpoint to Alexandra Pelosi’s somewhat controversial piece the previous week interviewing “typical” Republican voters in Mississippi, on last Friday’s Real Time, Bill Maher aired “the thing that would make liberals go insane”…

In the video, multiple welfare recipients proclaim they were at the welfare office (or “Job Center”) to get their “Obama bucks” and that they supported Obama because he “gives me stuff” and “because he’s black.”

What’s the Matter With Mississippi?

This short film by Alexandra Pelosi asks some regular folks in Mississippi why the poorest state in America is also the most conservative:

Pesky Facts: Mississippi has highest rate of child poverty (31.9 percent), highest rate of infant mortality (10.3 percent), highest rate of obesity (35.3 percent of total population), lowest median household income ($35,078), highest teen birth rate (71.9 per 1,000 women aged 15 to 19) and highest overall rate of STDs.

Who is Saul Alinsky?

Nice to see Chris Matthews (and others) tackle Newt Gringrich’s puzzling obsession with Saul Alinsky. Turns out, just like so many other weird fixations of the deranged right-wing, to be a classic case of projection.

Bill Maher also defused the mainstreaming of this curiously demented talking point in his “New Rules” monologue the other day after admitting that he didn’t have a clue who Saul Alinksy was before reading about him earlier in the week on Wikipedia.

New Rules: 01/13/2012

And in other good news… Real Time with Bill Maher is back from hiatus!

In case you missed it, the entire show can be watched here.

Note: Video replaced because… you know, HBO are kind of dickish when it comes to copyright enforcement.

New Rules: 11/11/11

From the last show of the season.

“If A Christmas Carol was performed by the Tea Party Dramatic Society, it would be a cautionary tale about how the hero, Scrooge – a blameless job creator – is turned into a socialist through the corrupting influence of Tiny Tim…”

Hopefully, the clip won’t get pulled by the folks at HBO, but you know what copyright nazis they are over there at Time-Warner.

Jeffress on Real Time

Dr. Robert Jeffress, current head of the Southern Baptist Convention, in a surprisingly delightful feature interview on this week’s edition of Real Time With Bill Maher discussing some of his controversial comments about Mormonism and other issues…

p.s. You can catch the whole show here.

Beyond Reasonable Doubt

Bill Maher compares the failure of jurors to convict Casey Anthony in the killing of her child with the failure of Republican voters to connect the dots between the U.S. budgetary deficit and the fact that the wealthiest people in America now pay the lowest amount of taxes in the country’s history.

Update: Replaced previous video link because the dicks at HBO took it down. This one has 43,000+ views so may be more enduring.

Rewriting Socialism

“We have the first time in the history of the profoundly stupid American debate between those who do not fear socialism and those who do, something of an agreement as to what socialism is and isn’t.”

Why Americans can’t accept that the plain fact that they have a mixed economy has always escaped me.
