The Conservatives’ “Most Expensive Environmental Program”

Ah, the things you learn

The Conservatives pledged in the last federal election to make all fuel contain five per cent biofuel, such as ethanol and biodiesel, by 2010.
A newly-passed law does just that.

At $2.2-billion, federal support for Canadian biofuels is the government’s most expensive environmental program.

Harper last week appointed Kory Teneycke, the former executive director of the Canadian Renewable Fuels Association, as his new communications director.

The information about the biofuels boondoogle was known of course, but I wasn’t aware of Teneycke’s connection to the CRFA.

How sad is it that a $2.2 billion subsidy for the biofuel industry “is the government’s most expensive environmental program”?

Gee, wouldn’t it have been nice if instead of fatuously noting that “Some biofuels are derived from corn, wheat and straw,” our wretchedly biased “liberal media” had perhaps referenced the 2007 study by Frederic Forge of the parliamentary library’s science and technology division:

The federal government’s massive investments in biofuels will be of little benefit in cutting dependence on fossil fuels or reducing greenhouse emissions, suggests a study by the Library of Parliament.

The report casts doubt on one of the biggest green initiatives in the Conservative budget – a $1.5-billion investment over seven years to promote renewable fuels such as corn-based ethanol.

Forge’s report stated that regulations to promote biofuels will have a “relatively minor impact” on reducing greenhouse emissions across Canada. “In fact, if 10 per cent of the fuel used were corn-based ethanol (in other words, if the E-10 blend were used in all vehicles) Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions would drop by approximately one per cent,” said the study.

  1. Funny how you talk about ethanol in such a negative way.

You must be aware that Dalton McGuinty loves ethanol.

But that don’t matter , does it?

  2. You forgot the reason behind it though.

“Jump in food prices spurs policy shift on 10% gas scheme”

So if there was no “jump” in food prices, Dalton would still love the idea.

    Seems pretty basic to me.

  3. Of course. It’s pork… and jobs. Last time I checked he’s a politician, no?

Q: Did I vote for Dalton McGuinty?

    A: No.

  4. I guess the presumption is that because he’s a Liberal, I’m supposed to defend him no matter what. How dumb is that?

  5. “Iwas wondering when Dalton had anything to do with BC….

    JK, world class idiot.”

My point is that all politicians are fucked in the head, Harper and McGuinty included.

While we sit here and bitch at each other, gas and everything is is going up, jobs are being lost, and what do we do?

Keep cheering on the same group of corrupt officials.

  6. RT, the reason I come to liblogs is because the blogs are so damn partisan.

If you look the blast furnace blog, you will see a good non partisan blog today regarding khadr torture.

It pisses me off that partisans like yourself blame all the worlds ills on Canadian conservatives and Republican Amercians.

That would piss off any level headed person.

Until you realize that Liberals are just as brutal as the CONs, then I will continue to come by oyur blog.

  7. Funny how you talk about ethanol in such a negative way.
More fucking corporate welfare….. from the Conservatives…

  8. I didn’t like it when Paul Martin threw billions of dollars in subsidies at the oil industry in Alberta (something the wingnuts there seem to forget) and this is just as bad. I don’t know why these so-called “conservatives” aren’t pissed about it.

  9. I don’t know why these so-called “conservatives” aren’t pissed about it.
I’d say because they are too stupid to even understand what is happening.
And yes, Martin was wrong to have encouraged the oil industry.
I don’t understand why Bombardier is getting all these handouts either.
Public risk for private gain seems to be the Conservative mantra….
