Sam Seder rebuts various comments from libertarians on his Majority ReportYouTube channel concerning alleged hypocrisy vis-à-vis libertarian principles in connection with the death of Ron Paul’s former campaign manager.
Regular commentators (you know who you are!) have probably exhausted the subject already in a previous post the other day, so here is the most highly rated comment on this particular video:
Libertarians are pretentious “social liberals,” that is conservatives without a conventional moral compass, and most Ron Paul nuts, particularly the online ones, are angry, young conspiracy theorists (9/11 “truth’ers) who think the “Illuminati” (Jews) is secretly tugging the strings of a “puppet govt.” to achieve “global enslavement” or “martial law” or some weird crap. Go to Alex Jones’ websites and notice the “Ron Paul 2012” endorsements. They’re worse than conservatives, honestly.
Quite aside from the fundamental objections to the libertarian philosophy that I have, the foregoing neatly expresses my increasingly exasperated frustration with Ron Paul supporters that I encounter all over the web, a good many of whom appear to be certifiably nuts.
I don’t intend to get hung up on the shooting in Tuscon, AZ the other day, but the incident does raise some rather interesting issues.
Much discussion in the mainstream media (and yes, that includes Fox News) has been centered on the potential influence of… surprise; the media! As indicated in the comments on a previous thread about this, barring evidence to the contrary, I’m fairly skeptical about any such direct correlation. That said, however, it does naturally beg the question as to where such paranoid delusions arise from…
I’m not sure if privacy law would allow for its disclosure, but I for one would be most interested to see the forensics of Jared Loughner’s Internet browsing history as that may well be far more revelatory about the influences that could possibly have driven this individual to violence than anything else.
Note: Just to head off the hate mail… I’m not suggesting that Alex Jones compelled this kid to engage in a wild shooting spree — it just happens to be a superlative example of the kind of furiously inchoate nonsense that pervades the airwaves (and Internet) these days.
“Obviously a Leftist” Update:
It certainly would be nice if people from both sides of the political spectrum would stop trying to associate the deranged shooter with those on the other side of the ideological fence.
Update2: TPM took down the previous video for whatever reason, so here’s a full-length version of the same thing from Fox. By the way, Sal Russo is a veteran Republican bagman who raised $5 million for the Tea Party and his firm is reported to have pocketed 60% of that in fees. Just thought I’d mention that in passing…
In light of the recent furor surrounding the e-mails extracted by a hacker from the climactic research unit at the University of East Anglia, now might be a good time to take another look at the excellent presentation made by Lord Christopher Monckton to the Cambridge Union last year challenging the “settled science” of global warming.
More germane to the current “Climategate” scandal and the upcoming Copenhagen summit, Monckton appeared on the Alex Jones program (yes, yes… I know — he’s more than a little deranged) to discuss implications of the revelations and the draft treaty being proposed.
Okay, okay… I know, Alex Jones is a kooky demagogue; but if you put that aside and ignore the ominous music track, darkly arresting visuals, heavy-handed Illuminati/Masonic references and intimations of a New World Order conspiracy… there’s something to be said for his theory.
