Blame Game

I don’t intend to get hung up on the shooting in Tuscon, AZ the other day, but the incident does raise some rather interesting issues.

Much discussion in the mainstream media (and yes, that includes Fox News) has been centered on the potential influence of… surprise; the media! As indicated in the comments on a previous thread about this, barring evidence to the contrary, I’m fairly skeptical about any such direct correlation. That said, however, it does naturally beg the question as to where such paranoid delusions arise from…

I’m not sure if privacy law would allow for its disclosure, but I for one would be most interested to see the forensics of Jared Loughner’s Internet browsing history as that may well be far more revelatory about the influences that could possibly have driven this individual to violence than anything else.

Note: Just to head off the hate mail… I’m not suggesting that Alex Jones compelled this kid to engage in a wild shooting spree — it just happens to be a superlative example of the kind of furiously inchoate nonsense that pervades the airwaves (and Internet) these days.

“Obviously a Leftist” Update:

It certainly would be nice if people from both sides of the political spectrum would stop trying to associate the deranged shooter with those on the other side of the ideological fence.

Update2: TPM took down the previous video for whatever reason, so here’s a full-length version of the same thing from Fox. By the way, Sal Russo is a veteran Republican bagman who raised $5 million for the Tea Party and his firm is reported to have pocketed 60% of that in fees. Just thought I’d mention that in passing…

The guy apparently liked his far-out-there socialist reading. Mein kampf and the communist manifesto were listed as his favorite books.

Shit man, I prefer my pinkos Jack Layton style…you can reason with those guys.

Some would make a correlation between Muslim leaders who remind young ones that they will go to heaven in great company if they destroy evil and terrorism.

Mein Kampf is socialist? Much as Ayn Rand I would suppose….

Geez! great to see you back but then dementia prevents attentiveness these days so not sure when you got back.

  6. I just picked up the blog again a little while ago. I found that I needed another hobby besides smoking.

  7. CWTF: Come on, man. National SOCIALIST Party. It’s right in the name, for chrissake! 😉

Would Ayn Rand qualify as “far out wingnut” thinking to paraphrase David A? Although I would rather subject myself to a braille version of Gravity’s Rainbow than read that tripe again.

  9. I have to admit to reading her “Objectivist Epistemology” as a teenager. Talk about youth being wasted on the young!

I just finished a year of education for a new job; my teacher imparted many Randian views into the curriculum and recommended the Fountainhead for viewing (it was a media school) & didn’t appreciate my review of Atlas Shrugged (though I have read it and Gravity’s Rainbow; funny what you did on long flights in the 90s to avoid boredom).

Strangely I find myself back in the online world in a much better position. I refer to it as my wasted year but the jury’s still out on whether I’m serious or not.

Great to see you back…just catching up on some of the posts I missed. Hope things are well.

Please, please, please can we all avoid aggravating the Randians? 😉 It’s so tedious.

  12. Hey Dave, nice to hear from you.

Gee, I thought “aggravation” was the natural state of Randians. 😉

Gee, I thought “aggravation” was the natural state of Randians.

It’s either aggravation, or teenage angst.

  14. Ayn Rand was a charlatan and poseur.

I laffed my head off when David quoted that asshole Martian Rayner to make a point – which was…? Oh yeah, something about his being a Commie Pinko like Adolf Hitler!! LOL!! Boy you sure learn a lot on these blogs, eh?

But back to the topic! The deranged shooter is clearly in the right age bracket and has all the symptoms of a person with paranoid schizophrenia; and while I loathe the right wing media almost as much as the left wing media, and cannot see any good reason for ordinary citizens needing to pack heat around in their pockets, I don’t think the media have any culpability whatsoever in this case. People with paranoia are always going to find someone is deliberately ruining their quality of life.

BTW, there is apparently some evidence suggesting that pot smoking can be linked to the development of schizophrenia – probably like smoking ordinary cigarettes is linked to lung cancer. That is, not everybody gets them.

I thought Penny was serious, until I saw this. Good one Penny!
