Smart Remarks: Twisted Teabaggers

Pennsylvania blogger Gil Smart nails the callous behaviour and rotten morality of the “Tea Bag Nation” recently captured at a dueling demonstration in Ohio over the contentious issue of healthcare reform…

The video footage featured in his clip really is quite iconic of the profound undercurrent hateful, selfish ugliness that seems to animate much of the OUTRAGE! characteristic of the so-called tea party movement that’s continually inflamed by crazed loons like Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, and that whole ilk of incendiary, misanthropic millionaire gasbags that populate the “right-wing noise machine.”

Thank goodness Canadian politics hasn’t become quite this toxic — yet.

“Give me your tired, your poor,

Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,

The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.

Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,

I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

    Yeah…..Right!

  3. Yet… exactly, but Canadian right wing is adopting both the policies and the tactics, so give it time.

People are passionate, and it brings out the extremes out of some people. I doubt that the worst excesses of the ‘tea partiers’ as presented in this video represent the mainstream opposition to health care reform in the US.

As for the social justice gospel that is briefly mentioned, I was once channel flipping and John Hagee (one of the more stauncher ‘conservative’ televangelists of the regligious right) was going fire-and-brimstone on his congregation, shaming them into feeling compassion for the poor.

Is Christianity compatible with modern conservatism? On social issues yes, on economics, not so much. So you have people on the Left (like Michael Moore in “Capitalism: A Love Story”) emphasizing the social justice side while those on the Right focusing on the morality aspect.

Extreme libertarian Ayn Rand goes so far as to reject charity and praises selfishness as a virtue. Of course, she rejects Christianity (and religion in general) as form of collectivism.

  5. heh. so, i’m a youtube slut…. a few adventurous fools have suggested that the man with the sign didn’t really have parkinson’s. my response has been that crowd acted as if he really did.

  6. Does anyone else wonder if the SCOTUS will declare the health care reform law unconstitutional? Wasn’t it Scalia that said enhanced interrogation didn’t violate the Geneva conventions because it wasn’t cruel and unusual punishment – because it wasn’t punishment? If it is declared unconstitutional to force purchase of health insurance, I guess that judgement wouldn’t apply to compulsory auto insurance, too (but I’ve no idea why). Anyway, this whole thing is getting more entertaining, not less, IMHO.

Did you hear that right wing militias in the US are up 300% just since Obama was sworn in? That fact with these kooks makes for a scary future. One would hope someone is keeping an eye on these people. All they need now is another Oklahoma City bombing which was the culmination of the last right wing crazy spell with Bill Clinton in power.

    Ya, right!

It’s already in Canada. It’s called “wedge politics”, imported from the USA.

As soon as Harper gets re-elected with a majority, Canada will have its first dictatorship.
