Air America RIP

In what’s turned out to be a fairly brutal week for Democrats, the liberal national radio network, Air America Radio shut off its microphones today and announced the company is filing Chapter 7 bankruptcy, just a few weeks shy of its sixth anniversary.

Of course, there’s much triumphant crowing from all the right-wing blogs about AAR’s demise, although few have coherently reconciled it with one of their most treasured conspiracy theories; that of the so-called “liberal media” that the likes Rush Limbaugh, Glen Beck, Bill O’Reilly, Sean Hannity, and countless other “conservative” blowhards are always incessantly whining about on their dominant radio and television programs.

What, no bail-outs for Air America? I’m sure one 10th of the bonus for one bankster would have covered it.

  2. It’s nothing for anyone to gloat about.

  3. to tell you the truth, i became bored with aar rather quickly, despite the occasional bright moment. there’s too much repetition in political talk radio. probably explains its appeal to wingnuts.

i’m an npr junky these days.

  4. … few have coherently reconciled it with one of their most treasured conspiracy theories; that of the so-called “liberal media”…

Few neo-cons could make themselves fit to do anything coherently. I do believe, though, that they discern the “liberal media” conspiracy not so much in the operation of transparently “liberal” media outlets but in that of allegedly “objective” outlets, such as CNN. The conspiracy is precisely in the mainstream media’s mutually reinforced pretension to neutrality.

Or so I’ve always understood. Don’t just take my word for it, though. Ask Tomm the next time he drops by to decry your effete Trudeaupian élitism.

I’m podcast, all the way. Broadcast medium is dead.

I’ll start listening to “conservatives” again when they stop screaming.

Yeah, as clever as that is, it might simply do to describe the Right’s fantasies about “biases” as the delusions of suspicious and paranoid dumbasses.

Sir Francis, is it really more than that?

People still have to put up with Rachel Maddow on MSNBC.

People still have to put up with Rachel Maddow on MSNBC.

Your wife dreams about her when you’re huffing and puffing on top of her, almost suffocating her.

    Fuck you, you moron.

  9. …is it really more than that?

Not if I suppress the urge—born of my essentially generous nature—to endow right-wing sociopathy with a darker, more tortured (and more interesting) romanticism than it deserves.

  10. Your wife…

Stopped reading there. No attempt to predicate that subject could have arrested the delivery of a non-sequitur.

“Wife”? This is Drake we’re talking about…

It’s really been a great week. Obama’s peaked, even before he gives his State of the Union address.

The U.S electorate has woken up. Obama’s rhetoric will now fall on deaf ears. Absolutely wonderful

Lame duck, and it’s barely a year, barely a year.

    Air America goes bankrupt.

A left/lib operation can’t make it in the real world.

Really, my only question is, why is that newsworthy?

  13. Ti-Guy

with a darker, more tortured (and more interesting) romanticism than it deserves.

They do in fact deserve to be treated as modern romantics. Margaret Atwood characterises modern pornography as their “love stories” and the Internet clips of torture and live executions, their “tragedies.” Alan Wolfe categorically calls neoconservatism romanticism.

“Really, my only question is, why is that newsworthy?”

Is your opinion really worth anything Drake?

  15. Ti-Guy

“Wife”? This is Drake we’re talking about…

It was purely for rhetorical purposes. No one I know doesn’t think this brainy lesbian is hot. Even my 75-year old mother says she’d “consider switching teams.”

  16. Ti-Guy

Of course, my mother says that about Angelina Jolie, so maybe my mother’s really a lesbian?

    Discuss.

Poor Rachel looked shell-shocked on Tuesday night like the rest of the NBC crew. She made lame attempts at humour and kept smiling but you could tell she was astounded and horrified – as the left often is as they watch the democratic process unfold.

People hate socialism and will vote against it when they see it.

Watching MSNBC on Tuesday was entertaining in and of itself. It’ll be the first of many similar nights for this crew I’m afraid.

i’ve become quite the luddite. gadgets and gizmos have little appeal for me, especially when they’re redundant. the thing i like best about my car stereo is that it has very few buttons.

Let’s all revisit Drake’s theft of intellectual property here.

    Someone kill it, please.

You can listen to podcasts on your computer. You do have a computer, don’t you?

I’ve actually come to really appreciate podcasts for car trips. In a lot of places in Canada, even in Ontario, there’s no radio reception at all.

“A left/lib operation can’t make it in the real world.”

At last I see the financial collapse of 08 for what it really was. All those banks and Wall St. firms were actually cleverly disguised “left/lib operations” (sure we all knew that was true of the auto industry, what with all those unions and such, but the finance industry really had me fooled).

Invest in a IPod. You’ll thank me…profusely. You’ll be able to listen to, among other things, CBC’s The Current, Ideas and the Massey lectures, TVO’s Big Ideas, Kootenay Cooperative Radio’s Canadian Voices, BBC’s Documentaries, In Our Times and Thinking Allowed.

Imagine that World, KEvron…actual news and current events!

sadly, i’m stuck with npr news, bbc news, jim lehrer hour, all things considered, morning edition, etc.

    Yes, that’s obvious.

Spare me, please. I’m not the one who’s crafted a reputation out of Internet torture.

My understanding of the problem was that Air America started off with shaking finances and tried too much, too fast. Instead of developing one or two shows and marketing them to established talk radio stations, they tried to create a full slate of programming and ran into financial troubles.

Liberals, at least in the States, tend to be younger and urban than conservatives. They aren’t as likely to sit in front of a radio for long periods of time.

Hopefully they will continue a few of their flagship programming on i-Tunes.

“A left/lib operation can’t make it in the real world.”

I dunno. Many conservative Americans consider NPR a left/lib operation.

Their ratings are going through the roof.

Washington Post: Consider This: NPR Achieves Record Ratings

I mostly podcast too. Love: “The World At Six”, “As it Happens”, “The House”, “Quirks and Quarks”, Radio Australia’s “AM”, Radio New Zealand’s “Morning Report”, Radio Nederland’s “The State We’re In”, BBC Radio 4’s “From Our Own Correspondent” and NPR’s “Morning Edition”

I don’t get to them every week but try to keep up on my subway commute and at the gym.

People hate socialism and will vote against it when they see it.

Maybe on Planet Wingnut, your home world, Drake, but people in America, even in the south, vote for “socialism” all the time.

Americans seem to like their socialized schools and public universities, socialized highways, socialized water systems, socialized airports, socialized police departments, socialized fire departments, socialized military and socialized border security. They don’t think twice about relying on government for safe food, safe drugs, safe water, safe working conditions, safe hospitals, safe buildings, safe cars, safe highways and safe homes. They rely on “socialized” agencies to ensure that the goods and services you buy and sell are made with certain quality and safety standards.

Americans have no problems with socialism. They vote for bond measure for new schools, bridges, expanded public transit, including light rail, even in conservative places like Dallas and Phoenix all the time.

People are afraid of change and there is a group of people who call themselves conservatives but embrace the philosophy of “I’ve got mine. Screw everyone else. Now why won’t you fix that pothole on the road I take to work every day?”, who exploit that fear.

BTW according to polling, Obama is still more popular than Reagan was at this point in his presidency.
