Faux Outrage Du Jour

Wingnuttia is a abuzz (read: frothing at the mouth, gnashing their teeth, shrieking with indignant outrage) today at… um, this:

It certainly doesn’t take much to get these hysterical loons wound up, apparently.

  1. They are the emporer and empress, and that is what should be done.

  2. According to some, American presidents aren’t supposed to bow before royalty… it’s what they fought the American Revolution over, you know. All men are created equal, and all that — so said the founding slave-owners.

On the other hand, kissing and holding hands with Saudi royalty is okay. But only if you’re a Republican.

Hysterical loons… nicely summed up, RT. What happened to respecting other cultures?

  4. it’s not like he barfed on them….

  5. ….and how world leaders had to drink from their finger bowls when chimp43 came to visit?

  6. From the comments at powerline…

“He declares that the United States is a country like any other”

    Outrageous.

  7. My mistake, it is from Assrocket’s post. I forgot that he doesn’t allow comments.

  8. How dare anyone suggest that America doesn’t bestride the Universe like GODS amongst men!?

  9. you forget redtory that americans take the presidency very seriously.

on the other hand one would think that obama would have had at least some lessons on the protocol of meeting the emperor.

  10. Humility, like intelligence, is bad.

  11. BSB — you forget redtory that americans take the presidency very seriously.

You mean like when they portray its occupant as a Nazi, a reincarnation of Stalin, vampire, Joker, or a monkey? (And that applies to the current and former holders of the office, btw.) Yeah, Americans are just filled will respect for the presidency. Perhaps for the office in the abstract, but hardly for the individual. Abe Lincoln was, after all, viciously ridiculed in his time by his political opponents…

This is an utterly pathetic, completely phony “outrage” of political convenience based on no moral principle whatsoever. It was simply a polite and dignified gesture of respect — nothing more, nothing less. Not to mention the fact that I’m sure that it was much appreciated in Japan, especially amongst the older set.

  12. “How dare anyone suggest that America doesn’t bestride the Universe like GODS amongst men!?”

RT, why do you hate the U.S.?

Look! Over there! Something at MSNBC that you haven’t condemned that might make for a good distraction for A.D.D. gradeschoolers!

  13. Geez, good manners and honouring old traditions is treasonous I guess.

I guess he should have rubbed her back like Bush did to Merkel or something.

Any exucuse to rant – what a sad way to be.

Audry II – no one hates the US as a people – it’s the zany wingnuts that hurt them.

  14. I’ve been mildly amused by the response to this, the fact is that if Obama was to squat down and crap out enough diamonds to pay off the US national debt and haul them out of the recession he’d be criticized by the usual suspects for being an elitist show off and not doing it the Reagan way by cutting corporate taxes — the side play would be about how he used 3 ply square instead of 2 and what that means to the war on terror.

RT: “How dare anyone suggest that America doesn’t bestride the Universe like GODS amongst men!?”

Audrey II: “RT, why do you hate the U.S.?

Stop trying to put words in people’s mouths Audrey II – RT is clearly mocking American Exceptionalism. A view which is held unanimously by the populist, reactionary, right-wingnuts of the U.S. …and probably yourself.

  16. Ti-Guy

Audrey II was just being satirical.

no one hates the US as a people

Uh, I do. When it comes to individuals, I feel differently (I’ve met Americans who are the some of the nicest, smartest people I’ve met), but collectively, the Americans have been hard to like for over the last decades.

I feel the same way about Canadians, but it’s not like we matter. And we do actually believe we’re a country like every other.

  17. Look! Over there! Something at MSNBC that you haven’t condemned that might make for a good distraction for A.D.D. gradeschoolers!

I took the first part as being clearly satirical, but I’m puzzled by the above. Apparently her sense of humour is far too subtle for me. Or she could just be an Enormous Thriving Nitwit.

  18. “Yeah, Americans are just filled will respect for the presidency. Perhaps for the office in the abstract..”

that’s why i wrote ‘presidency’ rt and not president 🙂

presidential bowing – from the LA Times no
    less!

In the US, we have Real Americans.

If you’re a Real American, the president, miserable, socialist, Kenyan impostor, need I say immigrant, though he may be, represents “you,” not those Americans of Convenience, etc. “You,” being a Real American, don’t bow to anyone. (“You” won’t even bow to Sarah, though if you’re a woman, you will shake her hand. If you’re a man, I suppose you can tip your hat.) Bowing to foreigners places Real Americans on the same level as these foreigners, who, like the people on the Continent or in Los Angeles, can’t even speak English, or won’t. It degrades us all. If you were a Real American, it would outrage you too.

From this incident we can distill the difference between Real Americans and Real Canadians. The Real Canadians, being a slightly foreign but not necessarily inferior, version of Real Americans, will bow to at least one foreigner, which, I have to tell you, offends Real American men, but, judging from the evidence presented by the supermarket tabloids, does not offend Real American women. So that’s that. (I hope this helps.)

Belief in their exceptionalism, is indeed rampant in the citzenry of the US of A. Even many fairly levelheaded lefties I know (by this I mean US lefties, so really centrists), buy into it. What so few of them seem to realize, is that – to the extent it is true – it’s only so, because they have summarily plundered the rest of the planet and exploited the populations of so many countries over the years to achieve it. This has of course provided them with the fodder required to build the most powerful wealth building machine the world has ever known (at least since the halcyon days of the British empire anyway).

I recently watch several episodes of the Ted Turner produced series from the late 90s “Cold War”. Episode 18 is particularly enlightening primer on just how many times they have screwed over the will of the people of other nations in the last 50 years, to maintian their “exceptional” position. Guatamala, Chili, El Slavadore, Nicaragua….the amount of blood spilled to ensure the US it’s prosperity make the Crusades look like like minor police actions.

Here’s a link to Ep 18 of Cold War if anyone is interested:

Thanks for the comedy releif, Ian.

  22. sapphireandsteel

Luckily for the world the Real Americans that The Seer mentions have not yet learned to read and write.

  23. Ian

    No problem G.

Glad to steer the thread back toward a more serious tone – and relieve you of the comedy that preceeded….oh wait, you probably meant to say comic (or maybe comedic?). Well, nice try anyway. Maybe next time you should get your teacher to check your post before you send it – just to make sure you are actually saying what you think you are saying.

  24. Ian

Oh ya and it’s spelled relief…..sheesh.

  25. “i” before “e” unless you’re a wingnut, in which case spelling is an “elitist” liberal affectation.
