    And that’s what I don’t understand. Do rational people really believe what Beck says? Are his hardcore fans really that foolish? Do they want to believe his asinine rhetoric because of their blind hate, or are they really ignorant?

    Years ago a friend told me the more outrageous the lie, the easier to convince people it’s the truth. He should know–he was a con man for years and made a fortune cheating people with wild stories about treasures, and lost antiquities that never really existed. He said, “If you look good and sound good and make it seem like you know exactly what you’re talking about and appear to have information that no else has, people will WANT to believe everything you say.”

    Is that the case with Beck; his lies are so grand, that they appear true? Or are his viewers just plain old shitheads who don’t know any better?

    Sometimes I watch what’s happening in the US and can’t help but think that America is royally screwed.

    “the more outrageous the lie, the easier to convince people it’s the truth.”

    Hate to tell you this, but your friend was paraphrasing Adolph Hitler. His full quote was;

    “The size of the lie is a definite factor in causing it to be believed, for the vast masses of a nation are in the depths of their hearts more easily deceived than they are consciously and intentionally bad. The primitive simplicity of their minds renders them a more easy prey to a big lie than a small one, for they themselves often tell little lies, but would be ashamed to tell big lies.”

    Not sure is any of the far-right wingnuts realize that they’re more and more resembling a proto-fascist movement? They certainly buy into whatever FOX tells them.

  5. paul, you’re ignoring the circle jerk factor.
