Afghanistan: “UNDR KUNSTRUKSON”

Writing in the Calgary Herald this morning, right-wing hack Nigel Hannaford does a pretty good copycat impression of Bill Kristol by getting almost absolutely everything wrong in his column.

Whether it’s denigrating the mainstream media by suggesting that “those delivering the news… often seem to relish anything that seemed a setback” (this based on the tone of their voice as much as anything else); accurately perhaps, but quite irrelevantly contending that the Taliban can never win a set-piece battle (neither could the Viet Cong); lazily wheeling out the trope that defeatists (such as conservative columnist George Will) would rather “cut and run” than fight like real men; confidently asserting that “Kabul is well on the way to an effective, battle-ready army” (absent any real evidence of this accomplishment despite 8 years of sporadic effort); and so on… Hannaford doesn’t really have a factual leg to stand on.

“Nation-building is painfully slow” Hannaford admits. Ah yes, but then, so is building a web site

    “Nation-building is painfully slow”

How true. Canadians have been building Canada for almost 150 years and it is the profound belief of many Conservatives that the job is not yet done.

So, why do many of these very same Conservatives expect a country like Afganistan to build a viable state, let alone a nation, out of nothing in less than a decade?

Let’s send them all there and find out.

I don’t think I could design a site that ugly even out of spite.

  8. The Calgary Herald is possibly the worst major daily in Canada.
