  2. Why stop there – socialist police, socialist ambulance workers, socialist military and socialist senate and congress with their socialist health care.

  3. Personally, I don’t have a problem with any of those things being privatized…I think it could work.

Rather, the point is that you could put “Socialist” in front of anything and the rubes would oppose it out of reflex. Funny how they don’t seem to mind “socialist banks” and “socialist drug plans” when it was Bush doing it.

And adamantly support the military, the one government organization that is run EXACTLY like a Soviet style socialist paradise.

privatized cops; Your arrest has been brought to you by McDonalds.

Private fire departments – old is all shinny and new again – is why govts “back in the good old days” decided that it was a “public good.”
So when the business that couldn’t afford paying for private service caught on fire was located next door to you, yours ended up burning down too.
San Fransisco comes to mind year – the good old days.

Will Marcus Licinius Crassus be in charge of the fire department?

    Really? I’m shocked. 😉

  8. Jan — I don’t know of too many people (aside from Mike, of course) who would seriously want to return to the days of privatized, for-profit fire departments.

  9. So when the business that couldn’t afford paying for private service caught on fire was located next door to you, yours ended up burning down too.

Gangs of New York was a great movie, eh?

We can debate my position all we want, but the real point is that by merely slapping the word “socialist” on something, the rubes will drool like Pavlov’s dogs and do your bidding. Even when it really isn’t “socialist” and all the while they will actually love and support things that are.

(PS.. who says private fire and cops have to be for profit corporations? Why not voluntarily supported, not for profit cooperatives? There are more ways to have a non-governmental solutions than McDonalds for food too…)

Mike…can we at least wait until the gated communities are in smoking ruins before we start re-inventing society? If we don’t, their residents will find a way of co-opting every alternative to corporate capitalism, as we’ve seen for 30 years now. These people can sell us anything. Hell, they’ve managed to package socialism for themselves as free markets for the rest of us.

  11. Mike — who says private fire and cops have to be for profit corporations? Why not voluntarily supported, not for profit cooperatives?

That’s one model I suppose, but who’s going to purchase the fire trucks, equipment, the station house, the land, etc.? (A multi-million dollar enterprise at least… which is why most VFDs are supported by local taxation, which kind of defeats the key point of your objection.) Who’s going to train the volunteers so they’re capable and moreover ensure they’re available 24/7, 365 days a year? And for that matter who is going to run the administration of this voluntary co-op and what regulatory standards are they going to adhere to?

My point is that even under such a scheme there’s a good deal of “public” (i.e., government) input that would need to go into the running of such a “volunteer supported not for profit co-operative.”

  12. So what if you choose not to volunteer to support this co-operative and your place caught on fire, or your neighbour chose not to volunteer, his place caught on fire and your place is attached to it?

Either you are all S.O.L. or somehow the expenses of the deadbeats are transferred onto those who are volunteering to supporting it.

  13. And I love that John Cole of Balloon Juice calls these people “Glibertarians” because they really don’t think these things though. It’s just a knee jerk position.

Libertarianism worked well enough when people were subsistence farmers and fairly self sufficient, but it doesn’t work in the interconnected society we live in now. There are definitely ways that the delivery of government services can be improved, but can’t see how unaccountable corporations (or corporations that can only be held to account after the damage is done through the court system) always offer a better solution than public entities.

In the real world the main problem with privatized fire departments (I think in South America somewhere) is they sat there arguing with home owners about the fee to charge while the home burnt down. I imagine when you tack on the necessary regulations you get a beauracracy as inefficent or worse than public fire service.

I’d trust UK’s Right to point out where an economy is 45% public and 55% private, that maybe 40% public and 60% private is the way to go. Everywhere else on Earth it seems the right argues for 100% private instead of optimal 60% private, so can be dismissed.

…as it is given the gross waste of primary education administrators in USA (more on payroll than teachers), waste of bank administrators (do they crash the wrold economy every 5 or 15 years under present practises?), and waste of healthcare administrators (AFAIK do absolutely nothing)…the only explanation I can think of for the USA not being a 3rd world basketcase much earlier is the fierce market competition for market share of their major corporations (excluding the above and more useless actors) fighting for consumer dollars must create even more wealth than is reflected in balance sheets. Otherwise shouldn’t Soviet Union-ed by now, I think. Have the best venture cap funding on Earth for University research teams going private for instance. The left understands when markets aren’t called for. To bad the Right is to brainwashed to build on market strengths rather than create weaknesses.

Marcus Crassus, founded the privately organized fire brigade, and it worked essentially the way that Phillip outlined; debating the cost of extinguishing the fire while the building burns. Also, Crassus was often the cause of the fires as well.

curiously, our rubes react quite differently, although a dog metaphor would seem appropriate….
