Glenn Beck’s “Secret Army” Myth

The claim: “They’ve been allocated five billion dollars, your money from the Treasury…”

The reality: “On May 7, 2009, President Barack Obama released his detailed fiscal year 2010 budget request. The budget requests $1.149 billion for the Corporation for National and Community Service [AmeriCorps] and its programs.”

I won’t even venture into the ludicrous conflation that the “five billion dollars” (which itself is utterly bogus) Beck asserts is being funneled into Obama’s “Secret Army” is “pretty close to the budget for the military for day to day operations…” other than to note that the Pentagon’s annual budget works out to approximately $1.4 billion per day — and that doesn’t include routine expenditures for the two wars currently being waged that are largely accounted for off the books. So, the bottom line here is that the actual budget request for various AmeriCorps initiatives for the next year is roughly equivalent to one day’s worth of spending on the military.

Darn those pesky “liberal” facts!

p.s. Bonus comedy at the end of the clip when Glenn previews his show tomorrow and warns of the coming “OLIGARH” (one letter is missing — but it’s not “G” apparently).

I wonder how they feel about Michelle Bachmann’s kid joining that “secret army”. Has she disowned him yet as a traitor?

  2. They’re are paranoid freaks. The 9/12 project? I’m so happy to be on this side of the boarder. I’m not sure how you are able to go through all these videos and not want to pull all your hair out!

  3. Brian — Indeed. It is kind of crazy-making (and the stuff posted here is just the tip of the of the lunacy regularly waded through), which is why I need to take mental health sabbaticals from time to time…

  4. C-C: Unbelievably, she turned what might have seen to be a case of monumental hypocrisy into a cynical fund-raising opportunity by issuing a letter to her base claiming that a local paper in Minnesota had attacked her family… In fact, the paper in question had only mentioned Bachmann’s son in connection with the AmeriCorps program, praising him in glowing terms as an example of a young man putting idealism into action and hailing him as a model citizen. It also noted that he must have been raised well to be exemplifying such qualities… But Bachmann turned this into an “attack” on her and her family. Amazing.

I’m glad you cleared that up. I didn’t know what the fuck Beck was going on about. You listen to this stuff and you think you’re losing your mind. I only lasted 2 minutes into the clip when Beck asked that loony tune Malkin to “connect the dots,” and I thought: “Oh, Gawd, here we go…”

Never ask a paranoid delusional to connect the dots. It just enables and entrenches their paranoia.

  6. Sure, sure yuck it up.

You won’t be laughing once I become Emperor, and have the Secret Service drop them off in Vancouver.

Could you drop them off in West Van?

RT: No surprise to me. The Repubs have mastered the art of playing the perpetual victim. In a twisted way it really is quite the spectacle to watch the Repubs oppress with the one hand while putting themselves on the cross with the other.

That’s been going on for decades. When might…the World…expect a decent response to it from the Democrats?

Don’t hold your breath. We fellow Dems have been wondering the same thing for the last 40 years.

Read about Americorps last week. Basically half way between army cadets and adult boy scouts in activity. Volunteering community work. They get a $5600 education bursorary but I don’t think paid beyond some qualifying for a living expenses stipend.
Think its meant to be an alternative to army or jail for trouble youths. If they had a sane Right like in the UK, the Right would criticize: some of their projects might not be raising literacy enough or are for some questionable orgs, some cost estimates might indicate price of volunteering is too high (much lower than cost of Iraqing Iraq or funding prison economy)….guys like Dick Armey and Beck assume market forces rule; are your worth. Since I don’t even have welfare income, I’m giving some thought to selling really-frickin-scary terror blueprints of all types. The Right shouldn’t have a probably with this market transaction. I’d have some explaining to do to those on the left and their families. But that’s looking like my career future as defined by GOP and GOP north.

Well then, stop complaining. If you can’t burn down the White House, make way for people who will.

I’m tired of the over-exuberance, the let-down, and the whining. Every two years, it’s the exact same thing.

Room 3603 was not instituted by James Bond (Nazis were the other bidders) to torture foreigners. It was implemented to get the Americans on the right side of the war and to train and found *all* North American intelligence agencies. The goal was to protect people from being tortured, not to do it yourselves.
When I see Beck it makes me think: nuke Americans. When I see our media cabal and CPC it makes me realize they killed the Pearson-Trudeau-Chretein-Dion-?? lineage that made our country prosperous powerful and respected.
I do not want this civilization to hit the Cube movies future it is on a crash course for under the stewardship of GOP and GOP north. It doesn’t look like rich Americans and Canadians want a win-win solution.

Sounds too much like the “Hitler Youth” program of the 30’s. I ask you “what just another 1.149B?” well hell! I guess that’s better than 5B anyway! although I can’t tell if less waste is better than more waste. Ever wonder how well a private Army could be equipped for 1.149B?. Were not just talking semi-auto weapons here! Rockets, Jets, Bunker Busters etc. etc.. Obama said “an Army as well equipped as our US Military. Anyway no matter how you slice it, if you guys want to spend your $ on this have at it!
