Assalaamu Alaykum

The night before Barack Obama’s address at Cairo University the other day, Max Blumenthal took to the streets of Jerusalem to ask young Israelis and American Jews what they thought of the U.S. president coming to the region.

NSFW Warning: The video contains some pretty shocking language. Viewer discretion is advised.

  1. Extreme ignorance on parade…. I’m sure the Blogging Tories will see this as some kind of “truth”…

  2. Yes.. us BT’s are all about getting behind a bunch of drunk Israeli teens. Would be curious to see if there’s much difference walking into a downtown Toronto bar about closing time.. the false bravado of drunken youth is hardly, well, instructive.

Though. I have to say. I was slightly struck by the youth who remembered his grandmother’s number from Auschwitz. It is a grim reminder of something we all should keep in mind.. beyond that, not too relevant, really.

Off topic, R/T.. I see “my” party is pressing ahead with the ill-conceived manditory sentencing bill. And I see “tough guy” Ignatieff is getting behind it.

Perhaps this is a topic that all thinking bloggers could get behind opposing.

  3. Of course he’s getting behind it. If he didn’t, the Conservatives would relentlessly excoriate him for being “soft on crime” etc. The “hug a thug” Liberals and all that, you know.

  4. I’ve often wondered what might compel someone to strap on a suicide vest and kill themselves just to kill someone else. Those kids just provided the answer. What racist little cunts they are. Where do you think they learned this disgusting behavior? Their racist cunt parents. Come on all you defenders of Isreal, I fucking triple dog fucking dare you, defend that tape. Defend what those kids are saying. They sound like Nazis and you fucking kwow it. This is the end of the debate for me.

  5. ..and, we walk into Tehran, and ask the same sort of questions mD. Better yet, we ask the President, and he says, we should wipe Jews off the planet.

There is an illness in the middle east, and it’s hardly one-sided.

  6. So what, Iran is bad to so its okay for Isreal to act that way. fuck that. Fuck Iran and fuck Isreal and fuck you.

  7. Well said, my erudite friend. Touche. So – clearly then, the answer to the problem is to send someone – maybe you mD, to Israel and Iran, and perhaps address their government assemblies:

mD: Ahem. Gentlemen.. (cough).. I have been sent here as special envoy from Canada to seek to resolve the ongoing suffering resulting from the continuing Arab/Israeli dispute. In an effort to seek resolution to these differences.. I say, “you are a bunch of racist little cunts. I triple dog dare you to justify your behavior.

(Interruption by a massive throwing of shoes..)

mD: In closing.. I say, fuck Iran, and fuck Israel.. fuck you all.

Yes.. I see a Nobel Peace prize in the offing.

    Indeed.

  8. By the way Rob, Joseph Dana addressed the dismissive criticism that the video is nothing but “a bunch of drunk Israeli teens” this way:

Based on our interviews these people were from high socio economic backgrounds and had developed thoughts about current Israeli politics. The question is why more journalists are not covering this story. All you have to do is walk the streets of Jerusalem and you will find dozens of people that harbor the same beliefs. As a resident of Jerusalem, I can say that the people represented in this video are not members of a fringe group or simply drunk college kids. These people reflect the sentiments shared by many people in this country and this city. These people and their families are the core of the opposition to meaningful peace between Israel and her neighbors. This is what Obama is up against.

And to corroborate that assertion, the Jerusalem Post reported the other day that “far right activists” have launched an anti-Obama campaign:

Over the coming days, activists plan to hang posters throughout the country of Obama wearing a keffiyeh, flanked by the words, “Anti-Semite,” and “Jew-hater,” written in red in both English and Hebrew. Another poster published by the campaign shows Obama shaking hands with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad against a background of a mushroom cloud from a nuclear explosion.

The Jewish National Front, which is backing the protests, said in a statement: “We decided to launch a campaign against the president of the United States and to say that Barack Hussein Obama is bad for the Jews.”

“From the moment that he entered the White House, we have been feeling anti-Semitism and hatred toward Israel,” the statement continued. “We have a number of plans, among which are demonstrations in the US and protests in front of the consulate and homes of the ambassadors.”

Little wonder these kids think the way they do.

  9. Nice to see this comment thread staying as classy as the loaded Israeli wanna be thugs in the vid…

Best part of the clip was the poli-sci major who didn’t even know who Bibi was. Hilarious.

    Oh ya, welcome back Red.

  10. You are the one who brought up Iran. I don’t pretend to have the answer to the problems in the Middle east. But I do know the answer is not putting security fences around those kids. I don’t care if you still want to defend Isreal, I said the debate is over for me. And don’t you think it’s a little bit rich for you to play the moderate?

  11. Off topic, R/T.. I see “my” party is pressing ahead with the ill-conceived manditory sentencing bill. And I see “tough guy” Ignatieff is getting behind it.
The difference is that some Liberals are voicing their opposition… Over at the BT it seems you are the only one…

  12. ” Well said, my erudite friend. Touche. So – clearly then, the answer to the problem is to send someone – maybe you mD, to Israel and Iran, and perhaps address their government assemblies: ”

I doubt I could get past Isreali security, but if I did I’d probably have about as much success at convincing them to embrace peace as Tony Blair did. None.

  13. These people reflect the sentiments shared by many people in this country and this city. These people and their families are the core of the opposition to meaningful peace between Israel and her neighbors. This is what Obama is up against.

The classlessness of the average Israeli is appalling. People have this image of Israel filled with pious persecuted Jews toiling away on kibbutzim while having involved discussions of morality, but the fact is, the place is filled with obnoxious blowhards and drunks with Brooklyn or Russian accents.

  14. Those kids are going to be embarrased if that video gets wide publicity.

I liked the guy at the end.

“All I got to say is, I want pussy.”

I for one have never said anything racist, exist or embarrassing in any way. Never. Not even when drunk, or to impress my friends with how tough I am.

  15. I’m with Ian:

“Best part of the clip was the poli-sci major who didn’t even know who Bibi was. Hilarious.”

The young lady certainly knew her stuff. lol

Nice to see this blog up and working, it was missed!

  16. No doubt – in my most seriously drunken and ignorant days, I can’t imagine saying those things. But – my response wasn’t a justification, simply an observation, with the added suggestion that we’ve got some pretty bi-lateral hatred that goes very, very deep.

I’ll give Obama some props though.. making an unequivocal statement regarding further development by Israel in the occupied territories is a step in the right direction.

The “world peacekeeper” needs to develop a clearer understanding that there is a bi-lateral problem in Israel. Time will tell if actions follow up his words.

  17. I ran a hostel in Ireland for a couple years and I remember dreading Israeli booking. We would invariably end up with a handful of yahoos coming straight out of their military service. They would get smashed, trash the common rooms and harrass our female guests. God forbid you ask them to smarten up or you’d have a fight on your hands. Oddly enough the Danes were the next worse.

  18. “Bullshit.”

    Ha, no doubt.

..and, we walk into Tehran, and ask the same sort of questions

    Anyways,

Poor kids, living in a client state, must be tough on the young mind.

  19. I remember my first flight on El Al. My seat mate (a Jewish immigrant to Israel from the Netherlands) warned me that the plane would like a tornado hit it at the end of the flight. She was right…the passengers just threw their litter on the floor. Free booze in coach though.

  20. I wonder when the Extreme Jewish Nutcases will team up with the Islamic fundamentalists, Republicans, and Neo Nazis to forge an anti-Obama coalition.

    Politics can make strange bedfellows.

  21. “we walk into Tehran, and ask the same sort of questions”

we send billions in aid annually to tehran? huh….

    KEvron

  22. The “world peacekeeper” needs to develop a clearer understanding…

Care to mention a place in the world where the U.S. is keeping a “peace”?

Oddly enough the Danes were the next worse.

Not odd at all. They’re Vikings, for fuck’s sake. Trashing stuff is their métier.

  23. Care to mention a place in the world where the U.S. is keeping a “peace”?.

Let’s face…no force on Earth is every going to stop certain people from imbuing myth with more power than reality. The USA is a force for good, full stop. Learn it, live it, love it.

  24. And where would Israel be without US aid. I’ve read over the years various $ figures. Some articles have said Israel receives more than any other country.

    http://www.ifamericansknew.org/stats/cost_of_israel.html

BTW, I saw that vid the other day and couldn’t bring myself to watch the whole thing. But I did view that ignorant Pol-Sci student who didn’t even know who BN was.

  25. PS – RT – Missed reading your always informative posts. My offer still stands should ever have need.

  26. Well, don’t you know how to spike the ratings after a long absence? 🙂 Welcome back, Mr. Kotter (no pun on the vid).

Re the vid, outside of its hilarious entertainment value, who gives a rat’s ass? Pakistan is where things are at; it’s the powder keg that’s being primed. Some serious adventurism for President Change, as in “Preventive Detention” Obama. Now there’s some change!

Silver is doing nicely, thanks for asking.

  27. BTW, while you were on your hiatus I stumbled across a great quote: “Man will never be free until the last king is strangled with the entrails of the last priest.” – Denis Diderot

  28. Sebastian,

I had a friend that would say the perfect day would include Air Force One crashing into the Vatican.

There are some pretty gritty opinions out there. Thankfully they are all symbolic.

  29. Leader of Iran, who controls country that’s racing to produce nukes, while vowing to wipe Israel off the map: just words, nothing to worry about.

Drunk Israeli youth spouting off: deep meaning that must be seriously pondered.

    Interesting priorities.

  30. Given that Arab state media regularly and publicly speak of Jews as animals, and has cartoons for children featuring “Jew eating rabbits”,

I wonder what you’d get from some candid shots of Arab youth out in the streets after a few cold ones.

  31. “Leader of Iran, who controls country that’s racing to produce nukes, while vowing to wipe Israel off the map”

i’m pretty sure he never said any such thing.

    KEvron

  32. Now Biff’s got a his own blog, on top of sock-puppeting and trolling everywhere.

I’m amazed that such people are running around, un-institutionalised.

  33. Iran’s new president created a sense of outrage in the west yesterday by describing Israel as a “disgraceful blot” that should be “wiped off the face of the earth”. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad who is more hardline than his predecessor, told students in Tehran that a new wave of Palestinian attacks would be enough to finish off Israel.
The populist leader’s comments, reported by the state-run media, come at a time when Tehran is under pressure over its suspect nuclear weapons ambitions and alleged involvement in attacks on British troops in Iraq.

He said: “Anybody who recognises Israel will burn in the fire of the Islamic nation’s fury, [while] any [Islamic leader] who recognises the Zionist regime means he is acknowledging the surrender and defeat of the Islamic world.” He was addressing a conference titled The World Without Zionism

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2005/oct/27/israel.iran

  34. Rob:

Yeah. There’s been much debate over how those words were translated and contextualised. It appears that Ahmadinejad spoke of wiping Israel off the political map–i.e. dismantling it as a nation-state–rather than wiping Israel’s people off the map. It’s a non-trivial distinction. Even hard-core Zionists would admit that you can eliminate a people’s nationhood without killing them.

Analogously, there’s a significant continentalist sub-culture within Canadian “conservatism” that is basically annexationist. These people, many of whom infest the CPC and the Blogging Tories, will admit that they would love to see Canada absorbed by the United States–to see Canada wiped off the map, in other words.

Now, I would never accuse such cretins of espousing genocide; they’re just fucking idiots. I think the same thing applies to Ahmadinejad, although his idiocy at least comes unfreighted with treason.

  35. Sir Francis, re “Analogously, there’s a significant continentalist sub-culture within Canadian ‘conservatism’ that is basically annexationist.”

Failing to mention altogether that it was a Liberal PM who signed off on the inception of the SPP and that it will be, in all likelihood, a Liberal PM who signs off on its inception, i.e. NAU.

  36. either way, rob and frank, iran’s leader never said any such thing, despite what its presidents may have said.

    KEvron

  37. SR:

Oh, there are plenty of passive annexationists within the Liberal élite, but whereas continentalism is a tendency among some influential Liberals, it is an evangelical mission with many key CPC players and a substantial segment of the “conservative” grassroots. They are the Clear Grits redux, in effect–without the Presbyterian integrity.

  38. Sir Francis, me thinks you’re cheating a tad. 😉 Signing off on the SPP does not exactly equal a “passive annexationist” nor bump the continental dynamic down to a “tendency.” Dollars to donuts, there were more high-end Libs than Cons at the recent Bush-Clinton gab fest. Manley was never removed from walking the SPP point, even during a Con government.

Why would it come as surprise for financial and political “legitimacy” to top off decades of the economic and cultural Anschluss?

Re an exchange about the CAP that we had several months ago, it may interest you to know that I sent an email to all 08 candidates (shiny, new leader inclusive) offering kudos for policy and courage, but thumbs down on political scope, i.e. national. I floated the idea that the CAP should become the ROC Bloc, that the NDP had been the wrong party to approach for merger. One brave CAPper replied. I’ll take it.

  39. ..the point, I think, is to try and avoid labelling Israel or other allies as “good” just because or “bad” just because.

There is a problem. It needs to be addressed. And the less that sides are picked, and the more tha problems are addressed (not nationalities or religions) the more likely we are to find a solution.

How many Israelis are moderates who want peace with Palestinians and visa versa? I wouldn’t know – but there are some, hopefully many. However – if you describe Israelis as a “group” as bad or wrong, or Iranians or Muslims as a “group” as bad or wrong – you risk alienating potentially your greatest ally. The members of those groups who believe as you believe – that hatred just breeds more of the same.

  40. I find it amusing and slightly bizarre that you are posting this as if it matters in some way? Umm, have you met young drunken teens before? In any country of the world they would say all that and more after some beers. In fact at the Vancouver convention I seem to recall some extremely loud and obnoxious people who shall go unnamed–including one member of the press who said some ridiculous things then fell over and spilled his beer everywhere.

That girl by the way did know who Netanyahu was, but was mocking the interviewer who slurred the name and asked her who “Yahu” was. Didn’t you see the look on her face? Haven’t you ever done this kind of stuff?

Oh, and FWIW, I personally know a lot of average Americans who are pretty angry at Obama right now because they really did think sunshine and puppies were going to fall from the sky the second he got in. Give em a few beers–you’d likely get a video just like this.

    Chill everyone.

  41. Aurelia.. in some respects I agree – see first post, but at the same time, I don’t know if you brought a camera into downtown Toronto or Calgary you would hear the anger and the “n” word thrown around like it was there.

I think there is some pretty deep-seated hatred – and in many respects justified, but if left unchecked, it will fester for a millennia more. So, I would not just ignore the symptom of the larger problem.

  42. “the point, I think, is to try and avoid labelling Israel or other allies as ‘good’ just because or ‘bad’ just because.”

ow, well, i guess i won’t do that then. sheesh.

    KEvron

  43. “In any country of the world they would say all that and more after some beers.”

    like iran….?

the problem is that i prefer a little more bang for my buck than “someone should shoot obama.”

he should have asked polly if she knew who yitzhak rabin was.

    KEvron

  44. Rob H., I can find you any number of bars in Toronto and in Canada at large where the n-word is used on a regular basis. I don’t hang out in bars like that anymore, but not much has changed.

And saying Fuck that many time in a row? Well, fuck I do that every hour on the hour. (Had to hold back recently with small kids listening.) Then again, I used to joke that I was one of the few working class people in the Liberal Party, so maybe it’s just the class of people I grew up with, eh?

Nothing on that video surprised me and I still contend that it has nothing to do with the country it was filmed in.

But I do think y’all need to get out more and notice that we aren’t nearly as lefty and enlightened a country as you think.

  45. Maybe the opinions in this clip should be given more credence after all – from Haaretz:

“It’s become a fashion, here and abroad: Jews who are convinced that they love Israel more than the rest of us – and certainly better than the rest of us – have told anyone who would listen, that one way to express love of the Jewish state, is to revile Barack Obama.”

The article goes on to reference the clipin question.
