Parochial Deathmatch

Lawrence O’Donnell and Pat Buchanan debate the faux outrage over Notre Dame inviting President Obama as its commencement speaker in May and to receive an honorary degree (something the University of Arizona declined to grant him, but that’s a whole other faux outrage).

  1. Like the gay marriage video this seems like a desperate attempt by right-wingers to stay relevant.

The problem is that U.S. Catholics are as liberal or more liberal on social issues than the general population.

  2. Ha. That’s exactly what O’Donnell was saying in this bit. But then Pat “doesn’t care about polls” — unless of course they were to “prove” some point he was attempting to make.

Typical hypocrisy. Although we’re all guilty of that to some degree. I’m often quite dismissive of polls in general, but not above referring to them when their findings are pleasing or corroborative of my position.

As for the desperate attempt to find some relevancy, the wingnuts do seem to be floundering around a lot these days… throwing shit at the wall and seeing what sticks. Fear, paranoid scare-mongering, rabble-rousing, etc.

For the time being, in the absence of any sensible ideas, it seems they’re back to the old reliable Three-Gs: Guns, Gays and God. (Not necessarily in that order.)

Their fourth G, greed, is simply in abeyance right now due to bad press. It will resurface though, soon enough… ;)

  4. While the “greed is good” meme may well have taken a beating of late, it survives in the notion that wealth may be “redistributed” by Obama and the commie-pinkos in the Democratic Party (as if… ha!). This despite it’s plainly evident by all objective statistical measures that “average” workers and the enfeebled “middle-class” have been plundered for years by corporations and the wealthy elites. A strange inversion of reality, but such is the way things work in the rhetorical Bizarro World that right-wing conjures to such great effect.
