Conservatives Biggest Porn Consumers

Here’s something that will totally not surprise you. According to a recent study by the Journal of Economic Perspectives, “conservative” or so-called “red” states spend most on pornography.

Eight of the top ten porn-consuming states gave their electoral votes to John McCain in last year’s presidential election – Florida and Hawaii were the exceptions. While six out of the lowest ten favoured Barack Obama. Furthermore, residents of 27 states that passed laws banning gay marriages boasted 11% more porn subscribers than states that don’t explicitly restrict gay marriage.

Church-goers bought less online porn on Sundays – a 1% increase in a postal code’s religious attendance was associated with a 0.1% drop in subscriptions that day. However, expenditures on other days of the week brought them in line with the rest of the country, the study found.

  1. They feel shame so they overcompensate by acting like morally righteous religious nutjobs.

Or it could be they are actually having sex only for procreation.

I’m more interested in the types of porn they bought.

  2. Heh!

Jay’s got a point. I’ve always viewed the intensity of the “conservative” moral message and the force with which it is delivered to be compensation for behaviour they would sooner not admit.

  3. Is this surprising to anyone? Seriously? I just assumed it was unconscious knowledge that conservatives were wankers.

  4. Perhaps all the guilt brought on by religious preachings (e.g impure thought, lust, same sex desire, etc) impacts ability to be real and true with partners about sex/desire/needs/fantasy. Therefore they’re getting it somewhere else.

  5. RT,

So you see a political “association” in this statistical “correlation”.

I think that says more about you…

…and Jay, and Dave, and Brendan…

Seriously, how can you take a 55/45 rep/dem split and spin that into some sexual differentiation that can be used to embarrass one of the political entities?

I would hate to be around you when you start doing this with race.

  6. Tomm — I wouldn’t take it all that seriously… no more so than other studies that purport to differentiate between “conservatives” and “liberals” based on… whatever. They all appear highly suspect to me and I’d definitely question the practice of arriving at such conclusions or reading too much into them. And besides, I don’t think that was the actual purpose of the study; more just a way to make it seem a bit “sexier” — which is kind of funny given its subject matter.

Just having a bit of fun at the expense of our right-wing friends, that’s all.

  7. Well I am sure if a map were put up of Canada and you track porn sales over the past decade I am sure you could pin down where I went and when.

I just don’t wag my finger and shame people doing the same.

I am glad they are enjoying porn, its better than what Haggard and that senator with that wide stance are up to.

  9. Yes, I admit to being a Scientologist. How did you know?

I have studied the “proof” of racist differentiation by statisticial scientists.

This work, which really built to a fever pitch in Europe in the late 1800’s, caused a lot of trouble in the 20th Century. From Nazi eugenics, to sterilization of low IQ people, to rationalizing prejudice.

  10. Yes, I admit to being a Scientologist.

Ah, I see. I thought it was your subscription to naughty_actuarial_secretaries_with_huge_knockers.com that was making you a bit…um…prickly. Carry on.

  11. “Not human?”,/i>

    can you read?

    “Perchance are you a Scientologist?”

i leave preposterous belief systems to the porn -crazed hypocrites in the red states.

  12. I always get that queezy feeling when I am at a urinal in the washroom, a man comes in an goes to the urinal right beside mine instead of going to one further away. I usually ask in my head, “Are you a Conservative/Republican? Or are you just happy to see me?”

  13. “Nazi eugenics”

Don’t forget about the the Alberta Eugenics Board? Or is that a little too close to home?

During the 43 years of the Eugenics Board, it approved nearly 5,000 individual sterilizations, and 2,832 procedures were actually performed. From wikipedia.

Aboriginals, apparently, were the most their foremost target. Teenagers they comprised 44% of all presented cases, and 55% of all sterilization cases. Shocking, but not surprising really considering where it took place.
