“Obama’s Playlist”

Oh no! Not another fantastically lame contest devised by the CBC braintrust to help “define” us… Urgh.

It seems that Canadians are being challenged by CBC Radio 2 to nominate 49 examples of our “mighty distinctive music.” (*cough*) for the next U.S. president “to groove to as he takes office Jan. 20.”

Good grief, how pathetic. I’m normally a pretty staunch defender of our public broadcaster, but when they indulge in puerile exercises like this the dismissive contempt with which some regard the CBC seems entirely deserving.

Update: Argh! It’s got a website!

Update2: My suggestions for this travesty…

  1. Well, you could answer today’s poll in the G&M – what New Year’s resolution are you going to make….unbelievably stupid and talk about lacking imagination.

    …yawn….

But in the eyes of many, such populist claptrap will make it more accessible…

I used to be quite dismissive on any kind of list until I read something by Umberto Eco upon a list can be a reflection of life. I’m trying to dig it up as he wrote it beautifully….

  3. Sorry RT, but however goofy this contest might be, it’s not quite enough to make me regard the CBC with the “dismissive contempt” that our friends on the far right do.

  4. Ah simmer down RT, it’s all in good fun… why they’d frame it as anything to do with the American president I haven’t the foggiest, but there’s nothing wrong with putting a spotlight on some of the wonderful music this fine land has produced. Up Lightfoot!

  5. I agree that an argument stating that this makes Canadian music more accessible would be ridiculous. I also find the object of the exercise a bit of a head scratcher, but I’m never opposed to highlighting any genre of art in this country, specifically that which originates here.

  6. I’m with Red on this one. Gag me with a pitch fork, please! This is far and beyond the standard nationalist and jingoist propaganda. The programming shift to go after the 20 something’s offers nothing but anal pap. I’ve had to switch over to beethoven.com.
