Shopped to Death on “Black Friday”

A Wal-Mart worker died after being trampled when hundreds of shoppers smashed through the doors of a Long Island, New York, store Friday morning, police and witnesses said.

The 34-year-old worker, employed as an overnight stock clerk, tried to hold back the unruly crowds just after the Valley Stream store opened at 5 a.m.

Witnesses said the surging throngs of shoppers knocked the man down. He fell and was stepped on. As he gasped for air, shoppers ran over and around him.

“He was bum-rushed by 200 people,” said Jimmy Overby, 43, a co-worker. “They took the doors off the hinges. He was trampled and killed in front of me. They took me down too…I literally had to fight people off my back.”

Update: The spirit of Christmas at Wal-Mart. Shoppers scrap violently over the last sale item.

Update2: More madness from a Toys ‘R’ Us store in California, where two people were shot to death, apparently in an argument over a toy…

  1. Call me Scrooge, but as the years go by, I come to despise this time of year more and more; the blatant commercialism, the fakeness of what I call “Christmas relatives”, and the grand notions that people should be embracing year round anyway.

  2. I agree. This year I’m just having my kids over for dinner on Christmas Eve and that’s it.

It was fun when they were little, but I really couldn’t be bothered anymore. Humbug!

  3. You’re not alone, Barkman. I came to hate this time of year ten years ago. That man in the video above died because of greed and avarice, things that Christmas are not suppose to be about. I hope all those bastards enjoy their Christmas loot knowing a man was tampled to death just so they can have more things and stuff.

  4. I gave up the Xmas stuff a few years ago. Smartest thing I ever did. No decorations, no presents, no nonsense. If I need to take a gift somewhere, they get homebaked cookies. (Nobody complains.:))

I don’t know if the creeps at WalMart still do it, but a few years ago, they used to have life insurance on their employees. When one died, they collected. Very weird…

  5. As Dennis Leary says, “Merry F*(!#ing Christmas!”

The lunacy just continues to explode. I honestly believe Fascism is lurking just a few steps away.

Who was it that said, “When Fascism comes to America it will be wrapped in a flag and carrying a Bible?” It’s a quote from several years back, possibly decades. But I just keep thinking about it more and more in recent months.

I know it is stupid to pin something that huge on something so needless and stupid as this incident. I’m usually one of those people who would chastise my own comments and thoughts, pointing out that is just one stupid act. But it is just getting so surreal.

This mixture of sheer (perceived or real?) desperation, wrapped in a mob mentality. What is it all about? And where does it end?

Here is hoping Obama’s “no-drama” approach really can begin to step things back from the abyss. And I don’t say that believing he is some type of Messiah – I don’t. But I’d settle for a good man as President for a few years. Here is hoping he can live up to that promise while delivering sensible, pragmatic solutions.

And bless the innocent man who died today. This is to be absolutely horrid for his family and friends. So very very sad.

  6. I gave up the Xmas stuff a few years ago. Smartest thing I ever did.

Same here. I don’t even set foot in mall after December 1st, if I can help it. When you have Christmas shopping 364 days a year, who needs it?

  7. “Mall madness” has become literal.

Honestly, this gotta-have-it-ness thing is beyond comprehension. What is there at WallyWorld that is worth stampeding a store worker to death for? It’s all JUNK, people!

  8. People dying so other people can buy junk they don’t need with money they don’t really have – that is just SICK!

My heart goes out to the familes of these victims.

  9. Screw you guys! Vesti told me about a slow cooker that’s on sale that my mom and sister can get me for Christmas and my birthday, and since I often cook for both of them, we all win!

People are dying because people are assholes.

Look at the people in line who are willing to kill someone in order to save a few bucks on one thing or another at Wal Mart.

    Take a good look.

They’re the people who you’d have to worry about if there was some kind of nuclear disaster where people turned into mutants and killed you for your food and water, except they started out that way.

Does it make you nervous that they’re the ones with the shotguns?

  10. People are dying because people are assholes – excuse me BUT the person who died at Wal Mart was an employee.

  11. Um, Sassy, I’m not sure what you’re saying.

This guy got killed on the job because two hundred assholes broke down the doors to get to their bargains galore. Those people should be charged with nothing less than accessory to manslaughter.

Meanwhile, in an effort to alleviate the financial crisis, both the Harper and Bush administrations encourage people to buy more crap they don’t need.
