Hell in Little Axe

Oh goody, another delightful tale of Christian compassion and religious tolerance:

After contacting the ACLU and filing a lawsuit, Bell and McCord became the subjects of hatred and even violence. Bell’s house was burned down by a firebomb. McCord’s 12-year-old son’s prize goats were slashed and mutilated with a knife. Bell was assaulted by a school cafeteria worker who smashed her head repeatedly against a car door. (School authorities praised the cafeteria worker, and she was forced to pay a $10 fine and Bell’s hospital bills, community residents raised donations on the assailant’s behalf.) McCord and Bell were both mailed their own obituaries.

The funny part of this story is that the protagonists weren’t even atheists but were simply accused of being so.

  1. Yes. If we so much as frown in the direction of conservatives, we’re FASCISTS.

Meanwhile… they’ll burn down your house, mutilate your livestock, assault you and issue implicit death threats… all in the name of JEEBUS! Hallelujah!

  2. The Moral Majority movement and Reagan unleashed these fanatics on us and they now feel free to lash out against the non-Jesus-believers and push their agenda on all of us.

  3. One tiny cavil. It happened in 1981.

I don’t thing human nature has improved much since then, nor have wackjob fundies grown smarter – but there is some measure of consolation in the awareness that to find this story we had to dig back almost three decased.

  4. Yes, I only noticed that after the fact. Had I been aware of that beforehand, I probably wouldn’t have made any mention of it. It would be nice to think that we’ve progressed somewhat from that time. Although, recent surveys have shown that atheists are still generally regarded somewhere below Nazis and child molesters on the scale of public appreciation. I believe there is a grand total of ONE in Congress.

  5. I’m really starting to turn from my logical, rational MLK style atheism to a no holds barred, in yer face, by any-means-mescesary Malcolm X style atheism.

This stuff still happens today, especially in the South and places like OK and Texas. I’m really getting sick of this shit…

  6. To be honest, this story sounds like something out of a Stephen King novel.

It’s got all the elements: small town, isolated, no outside authorities, and deranged townfolk all around.

Oh to be the journalist covering that story, eh?

Researchers concluded: “Americans rate atheists below Muslims, recent immigrants, gays and lesbians and other minority groups in ‘sharing their vision of American society.’ Atheists are also the minority group most Americans are least willing to allow their children to marry.”

And people wonder why some atheists are a little bit tetchy and “militant” in their attitude.

    Chicken, meet egg.

(All the same, no question the incident you highlight is utterly disgraceful.)

  9. I don’t see this as a “chicken v. egg” situation if by that you’re suggesting that atheists are the architects of their own negative impression in terms of public relations.
