Lovely sentiments, indeed… were it not for the pesky little fact that 94% of funding flowing through the Enabling Accessibly Fund has been directed to projects located in Conservative ridings.
Apparently, the vast preponderance of disabled people in Canada just happen to live in areas of the country that voted for Stephen Harper. Imagine that… what a strange coincidence!

“Apparently, the vast preponderance of disabled people in Canada just happen to live in areas of the country that voted for Stephen Harper.”
If by disabled you mean mentally impaired, then yes this may indeed be the case.
That wasn’t what I had in mind, but so it would seem…
OK a cheap shot …but it was irresistible
Speaking of the mentally impaired, Harper just gave a speech marking the fall of the Berlin Wall. I lost count of how many times he used the word “evil”. It was a speech worthy of George W Bush circa 2003. He was notably unimpressive, but I’m sure it had his rabid supporters erect and drooling.

Overheard in the audience:
Connie #1: What’s Harper’s talking about?
Connie #2: He’s commemorating the 20th anniversary of the Wall coming down.
Connie #1: What wall?
Connie #2: You know, the Great Wall of China. It came down 20 years ago and that’s why the Chinese aren’t communists anymore.

Omar — I’m tempted to go do a Google search on “Harper” and “Evil” but suspect the results won’t produce the anticipated result…
It’s all from new-right’s blind belief that Reagan and the GOP somehow defeated the ‘evil’ communists. Simple truth that anyone who had family behind the iron curtain knew – communism destroyed itself. I remember Bush Sr. bragging about how he was responsible for the fall of the USSR’s empire, it was not unlike a roster claiming his responsibility for the arrival of dawn.
And the toe is still tapping waiting for an idea of substance to come from Michael Ignatieff.
There has to be more than “look at what they’re doing wrong” to create support for the LPC.

Well, how do expect the to react to perfidy and ineptitude, Rob? It’s not called “the Opposition” for nothing.
Don’t be an obstreperous blowhard, Rob. It’s a bad look on you.
When are we going to get rid of these bums? A stacked senate by next year; buying votes in Con ridings with everyone else’s money; inviting Con candidates to big cheque parties, but not inviting the actual sitting MP for that area; H1N1. It’s gone too far.
Rob — That’s a false dichotomy. I have been absolutely clear in my deep dissatisfaction with Ignatieff and the Liberals, but that in no way mitigates my criticism of Harper and his *cough* Conservative Party.
Furthermore, I’m not attempting to “create support” — that’s the function of a partisan. If people happen to agree with me from time to time, that’s great… and if not, well, we can argue.
Paul — A: 2012.

I’m tempted to do my own search, to see how Harper has commemorated the fall of Batista, Pinochet, Marcos, the Shah of Iran, and Somoza. It would be fascinating to count the iterated euphemisms for “evil”–like “rather unpleasant chaps”.

I think that underscores a key difference between Liberals and Conservatives.
Most Liberals are ready to debate, explore ideas, talk about issues. Conservatives are more like mind-numb ass monkeys. They seem to live in a world of their own where logic and facts don’t mean a thing. Only blind party ideology.
“Rather unpleasant chaps”… Too funny.
There’s a country where no one knows
What’s going on in the rest of the world
There’s a country where minds are closed
With just a few asking questions
Like what do their leaders say
In sessions behind closed doors
And if this is the perfect way
Why do we need these goddamn lies
This doesn’t go down too well
“we give you everything and you throw it back
Don’t like it here you can go to hell
You’re either with or against us . . .”
There’s a country that’s great and wide
It’s got the biggest of everything
Try to attack it and you can’t hide
Don’t say that you haven’t been warned
You can’t hide in a gunman’s mask
Or kill innocent folks and run
But if you’re good at it they might ask -
Come on over to the other side
There’s a country that’s tired of war
There’s a country that’s scared inside
But the bank is open and you can draw
For guns to fight in their backyard
I could go on but what’s the use
You can’t fight them with songs
But think of this as just
Another tiny blow against the empire
Another blow against the evil empire
Just another blow against the evil empire
p.s. You owe me a new keyboard.

Which reminds me, I’m going to do my Masters next year and I’m in desperate need of cash. As such, I’ll be entering the Fraser Institute’s annual student essay competition. So, if you don’t mind, your wingnuttiest ideas would be appreciated. Here are the titles of the three winners from last year:
What’s Good for Business is Good for the Poor
Property Rights and Credit as Keys to Growth
Economic Freedom and Poverty
CWTF — I can’t speak for others, but my impression is that “liberals” tend to be a little more open-minded and free-thinking in general. It’s kind of what defines us as an intellectual species.
Paul–A: 2012.
Great. Just when we get rid of Harper, the world is going to end.

Perhaps, and this is only for argument’ s sake, there is more money directed to disabled people in Conservative ridings because they tend to be more rural and lack the built-in services that urban centres tend to have (which is coincidentally where most Liberal support comes from). I would suspect that very little investment would be required to improve service to those in urban centres while it would be more costly to service those in Conservative ridings in that they are more isolated and removed from the safety net already in place in major cities.
I would not be so naive as to believe this to be 100% responsible for the discrepancy in funding, but common sense would dictate that such an argument might as least be considered by reasonable human beings who are “open-minded” and “open to debate” matters.
Grammin – what an absolute load of crap.
Grammin:
I live in a rural area where you could swing a cow and not hit a conservative. Needless to say, there is no stimulus money to be seen in Southern Quebec.
*sigh*
Conservatives directing taxpayer funds to party purposes.
Conservative motto: “We make theft legal.”
Grammin — You may have a point. I wouldn’t dismiss your theory out of hand.
