Another Republican chickenhawk shows his true colours…
The Daily Kos’ Markos Moulitas managed to get former GOP Colorado congressman Tom Tancredo to abruptly walk off The Ed Show mid-interview by alluding to the fact that Tancredo, an enthusiastic supporter of the Vietnam War, nonetheless successfully evaded service at the time by citing mental illness as an excuse. “I did not get a deferment because I was too depressed to fight a war I supported in Vietnam. I’m a veteran,” said Moulitas.

wow. that’s pretty funny.
on the other hand i fail to see how their service or lack thereof is at all on point to the discussion.
only bone fide veterens are allowed to have an opinion on the veterns’ administration?

It doesn’t have to be germaine to the discussion. It’s enough that it struck a nerve with the Repiglican chickenhawk.
Gee, you’d think a Conservative like the unsavoury Backseat Blogger would understand that.

As much as I enjoy seeing a GOP bacillus pickaxed in the ‘nads, it was a cheap shot and failed to advance the discussion (as if a political “discussion” is even possible anywhere on American media these days).
I’m also rather surprised Moulitas failed to take the obvious (as well as more effective and germane) tack after Tancredo attacked the Pentagon’s bureaucracy– that of asking why, if the U.S. military is so patently incompetent, it should be trusted with “nation-building” in Iraq, Afghanistan, or anywhere else in the world.
An organisation that cannot deliver basic medical care to its own employees is clearly incapable of delivering democracy to failed states.

Moulitsas’s animosity is probably deeply personal. Tancredo, a 2nd-generation Italian has railed against Latinos in the past.

SF — Yes, it was perhaps something of a cheap shot, but delicious nonetheless. It should also be remembered that Tancredo advocated nuking Mecca in retaliation for any future attack on America by radical Muslim extremists. In addition to being a cowardly hypocrite, the man is a seriously dangerous loon.
Good point about competency, but one that would be considered highly “incorrect” in American political discourse where the military is heroically venerated and generally regarded as beyond criticism.

BSB — only bone fide veterens [sic] are allowed to have an opinion on the veterns’ [sic] administration?
No, but I’d suggest that the preponderance of credibility would rest with someone who was actually a veteran and perhaps had first-hand experience with the system — which, by the way, most accounts describe as being exemplary, generally speaking. Not to mention highly cost-efficient…

Precisely. I wanted to see Moulitsas attack Tancredo for his anti-American Pentagon-bashing, thus exposing the hypocrisy of the glabrous gasbag and of all his noxious kind.
But, yeah–it was pretty amusing to see Tancredo’s panicked flight from the studio. I just wish they had kept the split-screen shot of his vacant chair after he left, as a metaphorical reference to his total moral vacancy.

A “glabrous gasbag”… LOL
You crack me up.
Unfortunately, in the limited 8-10 min. window of opportunity one gets on these cable news yak-shows (where your actual speaking time is maybe 2-3 mins), it’s difficult to mount the sort of argument you’re suggesting Moulitsas should have advanced.

In Tancredo’s defense, that’s probably true. Judging my by the hysterical, nonseniscal rants that Tancredo’s given to, I’d say he’s been a long-time sufferer of mental illness.

“glabrous “..
I used to enjoy finding a copy of Readers Digest in various waiting rooms for the sole purpose of reading the section ‘It pays to increase your wordpower’
Now I have Sir Francis.

Tancredo ran for president and his advisor/campaign manager was Bay Buchanan, Pat Buchanan’s sister. Total bigots all of them.
In fact, I thought I read that Tancredo was somehow connected with the Minute Men and some violence/murders.

the idea that only those with ‘first hand experience’ can actually comment on ‘the system’ is just plain dumb.
let’s play with that a bit.
only those who have had abortions can comment on abortion?
only those with children can comment on the education system?
only those with guns can comment on gun ownership?
only those who are American can comment on America?
you get the idea, i’m sure, redtory.
as to tancredo himself, he really is a loon, isn’t he?
As to draft evasion it’s interesting that war that ended 35 years ago still resonates in American politics.
in looking at a list it’s interesting to see that draft dodging was an activity that actually cut across party lines: draft dodging
