From the same shopworn chucklehead who last week inexplicably ventured “smart money” on Harper likely exiting stage right this year, now comes the latest inane prattle — this time chiding Michael Ignatieff for his low-profile debut as Liberal leader.
Sorry Larry, but you lost me at “Archduke”…
That one single iota of rhetorical effort should be needed to dispel the profound silliness of the casual assertions and logical dingleberries of this deeply unserious hack perhaps says more to the desperate vacuum of Canadian political news we find ourselves in at the moment than anything else.

Can we prorogue the media? Anyways, I think Iggy is just laying low, because his eyebrow wax job went awry.
Xmas/NewYear’s – an excellent time for politicians (esp. opposition leaders ) to disappear
Xmas/NewYear’s – an excellent time for politicians (esp. opposition leaders ) to disappear
Unfortunately, they eventually re-appear.
It’s official, Red: I now hate everything. “Journalism,” here I come!
Steve — LOL. I second that emotion.
I read that article earlier this morning and just couldn’t muster the effort needed to point out how utterly fatuous it was. Sadly, some recalcitrant anti-Iggy bloggers seized on it for their own self-serving purposes. Yawn and groan.
Can we prorogue the media?
But what about the corporations’s right to free speech?
Hey Rt,
Of topic but I wanted to ask a couple questions about Victoria. What is the cost of living like? Apartment vacancy rate guestimate?
Possible job oportunity and want to see if the wages provide any sort of a life.
Vacancy rates are next to nil here (approx. 0.5% at last recall… although that was in the summer — things may have changed since then) but that’s not to say it’s impossible to find a place. A one bedroom unit runs about $800-$1,000/month (may or may not include utilities which usually run about $100/mo.). Helps if you don’t smoke or have kids, pets, or anything else that would indicate any ostensible signs of grubby human existence.
Thanks RT,
Seems apartments are cheaper than Toronto, but vacanciy rates much lower than here. I won’t part with my puss though. Here in Toronto landlords can’t evict you because of a pet even if you knew they said no pets. No similar law? I can smoke outside somewhere I suppose.
The regs on this are, how shall we say, rather fuzzy and “infinitely mutable” when it comes to the matter of discrimination — written more for show than actual effect, I dare say. Power of the FREE MARKET don’t you know? (i.e. When demand is high and supply is short landlords are “FREE” to exercise the most flagrant kinds of discrimination with virtual impunity by any regulatory authority.)
Re, “It’s official, Red: I now hate everything.”
It’s such an exhilarating epiphany, ain’t it? Now I would suggest to crawl up into the attic, dust off all your old Nietzche volumes and progress towards “philosophizing with a hammer.” =:-D
BTW, re one’s personal property, i.e. home, I have four cats that roam freely wherever and however they want, can fire up a smoke in any room I choose, and at the end of a day when it’s lights out it’s very dark and very quiet.
Larry is one of the more interesting inane, hacks over at the Globe and Mail. Why so sensitive Iggy-philes?
BC — A) Larry is perhaps “interesting” if you make that word interchangeable with “opportunistic” and/or “desperate”; B) I’m not an “Iggy-phile” by any stretch of the imagination (my position has been one of “wait and see” since Ignatieff took charge of the LPC); and C) the argument advanced by Martin here is utterly vapid.
The Rae supporters just can’t help themselves – always with an Iggy dig.
Get over it for heavens sake.
It’s been, what – approx 1-1/2 weeks if you exclude Xmas Eve, Xmas Day and Boxing Day together with New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day? Now, Iggy did the Xmas talk stuff, there have been no political shows on except Taber and QP. You’d think Iggy has been away for months.
Poor poor Iggy, eh Sandi?
RT, I know you ain’t an Iggy-phile. It was just a little light hearted jab.
He hates being called Iggy. His really name from a little history, from his grandfather, Count Paul Ignatiev, is ,all males will be a Count. So I guess Michael is Count Ignatieff. I think he is still writing his book although he did spend some time in Quebec.
Poor, poor Bobby Rae supporters – they just can’t stop pouting.
Now, can the sarcasm stop?
Fact is we haven’t seen much of any of the politicians over the holidays. I saw Rae on TV talking about the Israel issue and he said pretty much what Harper, Ignatieff and Layton said. Some photo-ops of Harper at hockey games – so, where is everyone?
Going to watch for who is tanned when parliament opens.
BC — Taken as such.
Larry actually defeats himself in this piece by setting out a good many of the reasons why it makes perfect sense for Ignatieff not to attempt to do much beyond finishing off his latest book (something that Harper may also have been advised to do… how’s that mythic hockey tome coming along, btw?) As Sandi rightly notes, nobody (or ALMOST nobody) has been paying much, if any, attention to politics over the last several weeks…
Ha, I don’t like Ignatieff, never have, never will. Should I get over my dislike of Harper, Sandi? Layton too? How about my dislike of sloppy joe sandwhiches… ugh.
BC — I didn’t know that it was necessary to “like” our politicians.
If that were the case, we’d be SOL big time!
RT, indeed, nobody has been paying attention. It’s been nice actually. But Larry is still one of the better ones, regardless of some of his missfires.
Well, the word like, is a little simple. But you know… Ignatieff, ain’t my cup of tea, hehe.
Oh good grief!
But he did have this say… didn’t he jump to the opportunity to make a lame statement regarding the situation in Gaza? Along the same lines of Harper and Bush and really Obama as well? Good grief, I am beginning to miss Dion…
Hmmm. Did he really “jump to the opportunity” or is that it’s obligatory for political parties to issue statements on critical events?
He may have not jumped to it, I just feel that he is totally comfortable with this non-apologetic pro-Israel stance (for what it’s worth, Canada has always been more balanced, at least since I am watching this here); this position started with Harper, Iggy seems content with his approach like he seemed content with his stance on Irak, on torture and his overall tone of not really appreciating the concept of cooperation (yes, I am reffering to how he would like to avoid having to make the Coalition work); to be honest, I fully expect him to be even more “pragmatic” than Dion, Harper was probably happy with him winning the leadership race… when he showed up on the political scene, I gave him the benefit of the doubt, having an articulate politician was a breath of fresh air; the more I got to know the guy and watch his ideology, body language and his overall demeanour, the more I do not like his particular brand of confusion (this is always a danger with smart and educated people, their rationalization is of a different caliber, much harder to swallow); for what it’s worth, my 12 years daughter summed it up pretty well: “there is something slimy about the guy” (no, she is not into politics, just watching him on TV here and there during the news); she seems to have a knack for measuring people up, Harper elicited “I can’t believe he can be so stupid, he really seemed like a smart guy”.
Harper elicited “I can’t believe he can be so stupid, he really seemed like a smart guy”.
Insightful observers said much the same thing about the inventors of the atomic bomb.
The lesson: beware smart people whose ambition is inversely proportional to the depth of their core values.
