During her interview with police, she claimed that her attacker also had “somewhat large ears, spoke very well for a black man, and was accompanied by someone who looked like Joe Biden.”
She identified herself as ‘Susan Pallin’ and had an out-of-state driver’s license.

Yep, it sure is. The standard counter to this is that the “assailant” could have contorted himself into some odd position whereby the “B” wouldn’t be backwards. To wit, this clever reader of The National Review:
“if the attacker was standing over the victim and the top of her head was by his feet (in other words, “upside-down” to the attacker), then that is not a backwards B.”
Apparently, the Pittsburgh Police have serious doubts about the veracity of this young woman’s story. Think about it: Having been assaulted by some thug at an ATM and then having something scratched into her face with a presumably dirty knife… she refused medical treatment. Yeah, that makes sense!

I’ve given and received my fair share of black eyes. They get swollen, puffy, bruised and make it hard to open your eye correctly. That black eye looks like one you’d see in a Three Stooges film. The lady refused medical treatment because make up washes off.

This really points out a distinction in journalistic good practice. An outfit like the CBC would have waited on this story (for what looks like now to be a very short period of time) to provide the audience with a complete story that makes sense and doesn’t alter drastically its sense of reality.
You contrast that with American television news, which is always BREAKING! something, only to have it turn out to be nothing at all (if they ever bother returning to it). When I followed CNN on 9/11 (because I had no other choice, as I was living abroad) the constant BREAKING! stories (like the one about a car bomb exploding on the Brooklyn bridge) did absolutely nothing but ramp up panic and hysteria.
Frankly, this stuff should be criminalised…or at least, all the hysterics should get together and launch class-action suits against the media corporations for very real emotional distress. They make out like bandits, I’m sure.
